Spay/Neuter Day 2015

On November 15, 2015, Limerick Veterinary Hospital held its 8th Annual  Spay/Neuter Day in conjunction with Stray Cat Blues and Cat Angel Network, two local cat rescues.  The idea was developed by Dr. Koenig in 2006 to help give back to the community that we live and work in.  Since then we have had 500 cats participate(although some were unwilling) in our program.

Each year Stray Cat Blues and Cat Angel Network have brought us rescue cats from their organizations and stray cats which have been trapped in the community.  Each cat is examined by a veterinarian where we note any physical abnormalities  such as heart murmurs, masses or wounds.  We also confirm the sex.   Some cats require sedation first, but most are very good patients.  Blood is drawn which is tested for Feline Leukemia and Feline AIDS(FeLV/FIV).  If the cats are found healthy enough for the procedure they are sedated and spayed or neutered.  Those that are Trap/Neuter/Release cats have a notch cut in their right ears so it is easy to determine that they have already been neutered.   While recovering from  anesthesia the cats are vaccinated for Rabies and FVRCP(Cat Cold), and treated for fleas, ticks and ear mites.  Recovery went smoothly with all the cats and they were all sent home on the same day.

All the participants of Spay/Neuter Day volunteer their time.  We had volunteers from all departments: technicians, receptionists, Happy Tails Activity Center, the business office and veterinarians along with several family members.  All of the supplies were donated by the vendors and drug companies.  Idexx Laboratories donated the FeLV/FIV tests.  Vaccinations were donated Merial.  Anesthesia and parasite medication was donated by Zoetis who also provided lunch for the volunteers.  Other donations were provided by Elanco, MWI, Henry Schein and Penn Veterinary Supply.

Thank you to all the volunteers and vendors and also to Stray Cat Blues and Cat Angel Network for participating.  Our next Spay/Neuter Day is scheduled for November of 2016.  If you would like to help, donations can be made to Stray Cat Blues at http://www.straycatblues.org/donate/ or Cat Angel Network at http://catangel.org/meow/donate/
